5182 5754 Aluminium Alloys Used in Automotive Applications

In the production process of aluminum alloy body panels, most of the car panels choose 5xxx or 6xxx aluminum alloys. At the same time, in the welding operation of aluminum alloy body panels, you can choose to apply 5 series special welding wire to improve the effect of the aluminum alloy production process.

The automotive aluminum sheets have lower plasticity than steel plates, making it difficult to form parts with complex shapes. In particular, high-strength aluminum alloys are prone to problems such as cracking and springback. In order to solve the problem of aluminum alloy forming, the industry developed a hot forming process. Aluminum alloy plates suitable for hot forming include 5754, 5083, 6111, 7075 and 5182 aluminum sheet.

The yield strength of 5XXX series aluminum alloy automotive sheets is an important indicator that affects its forming springback, and can be controlled by the solid solution content of Mg and the grain size. During the stamping and forming process of 5XXX series aluminum alloy sheets, forming lines are prone to appear on the surface and must be strictly controlled. In order to further improve the lightweight effect, Cu or Zn elements can be added to the 5XXX series aluminum alloy to achieve precipitation strengthening through baking paint.

For the all-aluminum body, the outer automobile body panels use 6000 series alloy, the inner panels use 5052-0 alloy, and most of the frame uses 5182-0 alloy. Since the side door frames have high requirements for strength and stiffness, they use 6N01 alloy as the basis and appropriately adjust the content of Mg and Si.

5182 alloy is a typical aluminum-magnesium alloy with good processing and formability, corrosion resistance and good weldability. Due to the processing and forming properties, plasticity and relatively good elongation of 5182, it is widely used in automobile body panels.

5754 aluminum alloy is used in the manufacturing of door linings. It has the advantages of high strength, good plasticity, high specific strength, good welding performance, strong temperature resistance, good corrosion resistance, and high fatigue resistance. EN AW 5754 h11 is its common temper.

Creating a new ABS aluminum alloy system currently seems almost impossible. We can only optimize the composition of the alloy based on the existing 6xxx series alloys and create an ABS outer plate with better overall performance than the 6016 alloy. Based on the existing 5xxx series alloys, we will create an inner plate ABS alloy with better overall performance than 5754. At the same time, the new alloy should have a better cost performance.
