Aluminum 7075 Material Properties

7075 aluminum sheet is a commonly used grade in the 7xxx aluminum alloys. Zinc is its main alloying element. The addition of magnesium to the alloy containing 3%-7.5% zinc can form MgZn2 with a significant strengthening effect, so that the heat treatment effect of 7075 aluminum is far better than that of the aluminum-zinc binary alloy.

Aluminum plate 7075 is used to manufacture a variety of structural parts, especially aerospace structural parts. It is the most widely used high-strength aluminum alloy today, ranging from the front fuselage truss of the C919 large aircraft to the mobile phone casing. What are aluminum 7075 material properties?

7075 aluminum sheet.jpg

It is available in various heat treatment tempers: T6, T73, T76, T77. Through a large number of experimental data and theoretical analysis, on the basis of 7075-T6, the aging heat treatment process was used to successfully develop 7075-T73, which is resistant to stress corrosion. Although this material sacrifices part of its static strength, its corrosion resistance has been significantly improved.

Later, 7075-T76 was further developed, which not only obtained stronger corrosion resistance, but also sacrificed a lower static strength than 7075-T73, which improved the comprehensive properties of aluminum alloy materials and became the best corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy.

7075 alloy can be resistance welded, and the long-term working temperature of the workpiece is less than or equal to 125℃. For incomplete annealing of materials or workpieces, the specification is 290°C~320°C, and after holding for 2h~4h, it is air cooled. Complete annealing specification is (390~430)℃/(0.5~1.5)h and it should be cooled down to ≤200℃ with a cooling rate not greater than 30℃/h.

The solution treatment temperature of 7075 alloy sheet is 460℃~490℃, and the treatment temperature of aluminum sheet should be close to the lower limit, and the number of repeated treatments should not be more than 2 times, so as to prevent alloy elements from diffusing through the aluminum clad layer and reducing the corrosion resistance of the material.

7075 and 6061 Aluminum Alloys in Cars

Aluminium alloys in cars have excellent ductility, half the density of steel and good corrosion resistance, making it the material of choice for lightweight structures. Taking 7075 aluminum alloy as an example. Its tensile strength is 560MPa, which is no lower than steel. For the same weight of steel and aluminum, aluminum is larger and can increase structural strength without increasing weight.

Aviation 7075 aluminum is also widely used in the automotive field. In automobile manufacturing, it is used to manufacture important components such as hoods, car doors, and frames. Due to its high strength and lightweight properties, it can improve the crash performance and fuel efficiency of the car. In addition, aviation 7075 aluminum is also used to manufacture structural and decorative parts of rail transit vehicles, which is corrosion-resistant and beautiful. Aluminium 7075 T6 is is main temper.

6061 aluminum.jpg

Today’s car wheels are basically made of aluminum. Using aluminum alloy wheels has a very obvious effect on reducing fuel consumption. Most car wheels use 6061 aluminum alloy. The car’s suspension swing arm and other bottom guard parts can also choose 6061 aluminum profile.

6061 aluminum is a kind of Al-Mg-Si wrought ally, which is n alloy strengthened by alloy heat treatment. Heat treatment after alloy formation has an important impact on the performance of the 6061 aluminum strength. The greatest impact is the solid solution effect in the heat treatment system. Pre-stretching after solid solution can also give full play to the paint baking effect of the 6061 aluminum sheet and make this performance reach the peak of effectiveness in a short period of time.

6061 alloy reaches medium strength after special treatment (T6), and its strength is higher than that of 5 series alloys. The moderate strength is ideal for the automotive manufacturing industry. The 6061-O aluminum plate has good extrusion formability, and the finished product after quenching has high hardness and strength, which meets the requirements of lightweight and high-strength composite high-end wheel hubs.

Why Is Duralumin Used in Aircraft?

“Large aircraft” generally refers to transport aircraft with a total take-off weight exceeding 100 t, including military and civilian large transport aircraft, as well as trunk airliners with more than 150 seats. Aluminum alloys have low density, high specific strength, strong corrosion resistance, and easy thermal conductivity. It has a series of advantages such as good plasticity and processing performance, low cost, etc., and has always been the main material for the structure of large aircraft in aviation.

matweb aluminum 7075.jpg

The traditional aluminum alloys for large aircraft structures are mainly high-strength 2000 series((2024, 2224, 2324, 2424, 2524, etc.) and ultra-high-strength 7000 series(matweb aluminum 7075, 7475, 7050, 7150, 7055 , 7085, etc.) After the 1980s, although there was aluminum lithium alloy, rapid solidification aluminum alloy, composite materials, the traditional 2000 and 7000 aluminum alloys still show strong vitality.

7075 aluminum alloy is a high-strength, heat-treatable wrought alloy developed by Alcoa in 1943. The alloy contains zinc, magnesium, chromium and copper as hardeners, as well as small amounts of iron, silicon, manganese and titanium. Al-7075 is much stronger than carbon steel after heat treatment. The common tempers are 7075-T6, T651, T7351, T73, T76, T7651, O, W, W51, etc.

The success of the 7150-T77 aluminum not only meets the requirements of corrosion performance, but also does not sacrifice the strength of the alloy. Later, by adjusting the alloy composition, reducing the content of impurity elements such as Fe and Si, and improving the production process, Alcoa developed the 7055-T77 ultra-high strength plate and the 2524-T3 ultra-high fatigue strength plate.

2024 aircraft aluminum alloy is a typical hard aluminum alloy in the aluminum-copper-magnesium system, whose composition is more effective. What are the al 2024 properties? It has high strength and certain temperature resistance, and can be used as a working part below 150 degrees. After heat treatment, the 2024 aluminum alloy has undergone solid solution treatment to obtain relatively high compressive strength and ductility. Because its strength is very high, it is generally used to produce skins, roof beams, bulkheads, and wings by plane.

The fracture toughness and fatigue resistance of 2524-T3 clad aluminum plate are more than 30% higher than that of 2024-T3 clad aluminum plate, and it is considered to be the most ideal aircraft skin material at present. The strength of 7055-T77 alloy is 25% higher than 7075-T651 and 8~12% higher than 7150-T77, while the fracture toughness and stress corrosion resistance are comparable to 7050-T61.

How to Choose Aircraft Aluminum Sheet for Sale

For different applications, different aluminum sheet properties are needed like strength, corrosion resistance, decoration, and workability. If it is difficult to satisfy all the items and it is not necessary, it is recommended to decide on the priority.

 7055 aluminum.jpg

1. General purpose

Well-known pure aluminum plates such as 1100 and 1200 can be used for various purposes. The purity of both is above 99.00%.

About 0.1% of Cu (copper) is added to 1100 aluminum sheet, so it is more advantageous than 1200 in terms of strength.

2. Strength

The common strength reference standard is

Pure aluminum (1000 alloy) <Al-Mn (3000 alloy)<Al-Mg (5000 alloy)<Al-Mg-Si (6000 alloy)<Al-Cu (2000 alloy)< Al-Zn-Mg (7000 alloy).

The corresponding representative alloy grades are as follow

  • Al-Mn alloy: 3003, 3004
  • Al-Mg alloy: 5052, 5083
  • Al-Mg-Si alloy: 6063, 6061, 6005
  • Al-Cu alloy: 2014, 2017, 2024
  • Al-Zn-Mgalloy: 7003, 7204, 7075, 7050, 7055 aluminum alloy

The tensile strength of aluminum alloys ranges from 60MPa (1080-O alumiium) to 90MPa7 (7075-T6). For structures with welding as the main body, please consider 5083 aluminum sheet. When higher weld strength is required, consider 7204 or 7003.

When there is no corrosion resistance problem or complete anti-corrosion treatment is done, 2014-T6, 2017-T3, 2024-T4, 7075-T6 materials can be selected. Compared with 7150-T77, the stress corrosion resistance of 7055-T77 is almost same, but the strength is greatly improved, which is the highest strength among the current aircraft aluminum alloys.

3. Corrosion resistance

Corrosion resistance will vary greatly depending on the use environment. For medicine and food containers, please consider 1100 and 1200 aluminum alloy. When higher corrosion resistance is required, consider higher purity aluminum such as 1070 and 1080. In terms of water resistance, 3003 aluminum shet is used for fresh water, and 5052 or 5083 aluminum plate is used for sea water. Al-Cu and Al-Zn-Mg alloys cause stress corrosion cracking depending on the conditions of use.

4. Processability

Extrusions such as beer cans generally use 1100, 3003, and 3004.

Among common cutting materials, 2011 has excellent machinability, but poor corrosion resistance.

5. Weldability

For MIG and TIG welding, pure aluminum, Al-Mn, Al-Mg and and Cu-free has excellent weldng performance. When the strength after welding is emphasized, 7204 and 7003 should be selected, and when the corrosion resistance is valued, 5083 should be used.

The strength of Al-Mg-Si alloys decreases after welding. 6063 aluminum alloy is a heat-treatable strengthening alloy with medium strength in the AL-Mg-Si series. What are 6063 t6 aluminum properties? It has good corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, good cold workability, and moderate strength.

The aircraft aluminum sheet has good mechanical and processing properties, good plasticity after solution treatment, and good heat treatment strengthening effect. Generally, it has high strength and good toughness below 150°C (or even higher). It is an ideal aviation structural material.

The performance of aluminum cannot meet the requirements of use in most occasions. For this reason, people add various alloying elements to pure aluminum to produce aluminum alloys that meet various properties and uses.

There are many kinds of aluminum alloys used in airplanes. There are mainly two kinds: 2 series(2024, 2017, 2A12,etc.) and 7 series(7075, 7475, 7050, 7A04,etc.). Some 5 series(5a06, 5052,5086,etc.) and 6 series(6061 and6082) are also used in airplanes.

The typical 7 series aluminum alloy is 7075 aluminum sheet which mainly contains zinc and belongs to the aviation series. It is an aluminum-magnesium-zinc-copper alloy and is a heat-treatable alloy. It is a super-hard aluminum alloy with good wear resistance and good weldability, but poor corrosion resistance.

2014 aluminum sheet is used in applications requiring high strength and hardness (including high temperature), such as heavy aircraft, forgings, thick plates and extruded materials, wheels and structural components.

In China, the manufacturing demand for large aircraft is strongly driving the demand for aluminum alloy materials, especially aircraft aluminum sheet. The C919 large passenger aircraft has received more than 500 orders from more than 20 domestic and foreign airlines, and there are more than 200 orders for the ARJ21-700.
